I am so sad to be writing this; Michael Gough, whom I grew up knowing as Batman’s loyal butler Alfred, has passed away at 94.
Gough appeared in more than 100 films, but he is best known as Bruce Wayne’s loyal confidante and guardian, Alfred Pennyworth, in the 90’s Batman movies, from Burton’s Batman in 1989 to Schumacher’s Batman and Robin in 1997. His numerous appearances include classic Dr. Who episodes; the 1958 Dracula film; Best Picture winner Out of Africa; as well as Burton’s later films, such as Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland. According to USA Today, Gough passed away from old age, at his home in England surrounded by his family.
What a sad day for fans and the community at large. A blog post can hardly do his legacy justice. We have lost a legend, and his talent will be surely missed.
