Emerald Knights: standalone film or marketing ploy?

Hey look, it’s a Green Lantern promotion for the live action movie!

*cough* I mean, it’s a sneak peek for the animated Green Lantern: Emerald Knights film!

All joking aside (well most of it), this does look like a solid film, though perhaps geared more towards GL fans than casual ones. The voice cast looks great, including Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly) as Hal Jordan and Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy from Harry Potter) as Sinestro. Commence geekout about how awesome that will be.

DC isn’t the only one with this kind of marketing in mind. Marvel’s animated film Thor: Tales of Asgard will be released in mid-May–and it’s apparently a prequel to the live-action film, also premiering in May. Coincidence? I think not!

I’d like to think that animated films are more than just promotion for the “real” live-action movie, on the same level as McDonald toys and novella adaptations. This certainly seems to be the case with Marvel, as Thor’s voice acting and animation is definitely subpar to Green Lantern’s. But as long as the fans are kept in mind, I guess we don’t have to worry…too much.
